223 killed, 579 hurt in 335 road accidents in Kishtwar

KISHTWAR, Jan 1: Senior National Conference leader and MLA Kishtwar Sajjad Ahmed Kichloo inaugurated road safety week at Degree College here today.
Deputy Commissioner Kishtwar Saleem Mohammad Chowdhary, ARTO Kishtwar Kuldeep Singh and officials of traffic and civil society were also present on the occasion.
Addressing the gathering of students and prominent citizens Kichloo stressed on traffic awareness campaign in Kishtwar. He said that rough road and difficult mountainous terrain are the main reasons behind the rising number of accidents in Chenab valley including Kishtwar resuling into death of hundreds of people every year.
He stressed up on the GREF authorities to implement all the decisions taken up during various review meetings with respect to Kishtwar-Batote National Highway including construction of parapet and crash barriers at vulnerable sites. Kichloo said that the department must maintain strictness while issuing driving licenses and fitness certificates to commercial vehicles.
The MLA Kishtwar also urged drivers and public to follow the traffic rules in letter and spirit so the growing rate of accidents could be checked. Later he flagged off the student rally from Degree College in which over 300 students from different schools of Kishtwar, beside troops of CISF participated. The rally after
passing through various bazaars of Kishtwar cumulated at Boys Higher Secondary School Kishtwar. The students raised slogans highlighting the menace of traffic violations.
It is pertinent to mention that 19655 accidents took place in Jammu and Kashmir since 2009 up to November 2011 in which 3079 people lost their lives while 22837 persons got injured. In Kishtwar alone 335 accidents took place from 2008-2012 in which 579 people got injured while 223 people lost their lives.
