| Omar Abdullah seeks commission to probe cases of disappearances | | | Jammu, February 17 National Conference Chief Omar Abdullah on Saturday once again raised the demand for setting up of Truth and reconciliation commission (TRC) on the lines of one constituted in South Africa in the post apartheid era to find out the truth behind disappearance of thousands of youth for last 17 years in Jammu and Kashmir. Besides, he also made it clear that NC would not mind going to polls in the event of coalition government falling apart on its own. "We are not in a hurry to force early elections but in case the coalition govt fell apart we would prefer going to polls than sharing the blame for their ills". Omar also demanded white paper putting pressure on the coalition government to come up with details of funds spent on development work after the formation of the coalition government in 2002. In his hour long interaction with mediapersons here at Sher-e-Kashmir bhawan, NC chief also demanded review of Indus water treaty and adequate compensation package for the state in lieu of heavy losses the state has suffered on account of faulty Indus water treaty of 1960 signed between India and Pakistan. Referring to sudden rise in cases of human rights violation, Omar maintained that is not the National conference which is claiming that situation has improved but the coalition partners had brought contradictions to the fore. "On one hand former chief minister says that sitaution has deteiorated after the change of guard and on the other they nevber stop short o demanding withdrawal of troops fromthe kashmir valley.he said his party would continue to stay away working group meeting on centre state relationships until situation improved on the ground". "unfortunately the situation has not shown any signs of improvement and we cannot join back unless their is slight improvement in the situation on the ground. On demilitarisation, he made it clear that demilitarisation is integral part of the resoltuion of the kashmir issue but troop withdrwal as per the state govt claim can only take place from those areas where they claim a dramatic improvement has take place. Raising the demand for setting up of truth and reconciliation commission Omar in his opening remarks said that for last 17 years in the state a state of confusion is prevailing with regard to whereabouts of large number of missing youth. He said state chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has been claiming that large number of youth who have allegedly gone missing are still living across line of control in POK and efforts should be made to bring truth to light time has come and I appeal to the government of India and Pakistan to agree on setting up of truth and reconciliation commission and the same should be provided access to visit areas across the line of control to track down the missing youth.Referring to his recent visit to Pakistan Omar said during his visit to Pakistan he had the opportunity to meet several youth settled in Pakistan occupied Kashmir and share a desire to return home. He said I cannot claim to be speaking on their behalf but fact of the matter is large number of youth really want to return home.
