Custodial death of youth evokes sharp protest, Dy SP among 10 injured in clash
Incharge PP among three policemen suspended, judicial probe ordered

Custodial death of a youth, allegedly succumbed due to the Police torture in Police Post at village Phallan Mandal in Satwari area, evoked sharp protest from the annoyed villagers which set ablaze a Police vehicle, Motorbike and damaged newly constructed Police Post of Makwal. Meanwhile, Incharge Police Post and two other Policemen have been placed under suspension for the killing and a magisterial enquiry has been ordered into the episode on the directions of Chief Minister.
According to reports, a twenty year old youth Tarsem Lal, son of Khazan Chand of Makwal was detained by Police at 8 this morning in Phallan Mandal post on a complaint that he was threatening a villager namely Swarn Kumar. With in one and half hour, police shifted the youth in unconscious condition in Sohanjana Hospital where doctors declared him as brought dead. According to sources, the youth who was allegedly tortured by police during interrogation due to which he breathed his last. The police team requested the doctors to label the death as a poison death case but, doctor refused to do so, sources added.
As soon as the news of the death of the youth spread, people of the area came out to protest against the police for alleged custodial death. The annoyed mob pelted stones at police post and set ablaze a police vehicle. On seeing the situation going out of control, police resorted to lathi charge in which about six villagers got injured. Three police officers including Dy SP S D S Chouhan and SHO Satwari, Arvinder Kotwal were also injured in the clash.
After a brief clash, entire posse of Police force ran away from the spot fearing danger to their lives. The protesting people were demanding judicial probe in the incident and insisted on District Magistrate’s visit as SSP Jammu, Mukesh Singh failed to pacify the villagers. The protestors were pacified only after the visit of DC Jammu and local MLA. Meanwhile, Incharge Police Post Phallan Mandal, ASI Deepak Sharma, HC Mehmood Ahmed and Munshi, Zaffar Hussain have been placed on suspension and some of the demands including government job to kin of the deceased, cash compensation and post mortem by a board of doctors. DC assured that if the accused policemen found guilty will be punished strictly.
