| Water supply sector receives considerable thrust | | 3,000 habitations provided safe drinking water | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Jan 8 : Jammu and Kashmir witnessed considerable progress in the sector of Public Health Engineering during last four years and the process of coverage of uncovered areas under the protected drinking water supply schemes received remarkable fillip. As many as 3,000 habitations were provided drinking water by incurring an expenditure of over Rs. 645 crores during the last four years of the current coalition dispensation besides completion of 1031 water supply schemes in this period more than 10,000 hand pumps were drilled in water scare areas to benefit the inhabitants. In a drive to provide safe drinking water to educational institutions, the PHE Department in an outstanding performance covered 4,360 schools under this scheme and the process continues with full swing. In order to ascertain the safety of drinking water being supplied to the people through various schemes, as many as 43 water testing laboratories have been established in the State besides putting in place 214 treatment plants for treating chloride, iron, salinity, turbidity, calcium and sulphur affected water resources at an estimated cost of over Rs. 44.87 crores have been launched and 45 have been completed. The prestigious drinking water supply project for Jammu involving Asian Development Bank funds to utilize Chenab water and meet the demand of Greater Jammu up to 2030 has been approved. The first phase of the project is likely to cost over Rs. 500 crores. Similarly, augmentation schemes for Srinagar city are also in progress. During the last four years 556 sustainable schemes of check dams, percolation tanks, wells and other structures have been taken up for execution at a cost of Rs. 178 crores. The provision safe drinking water in kandi and scare areas is being focused through special schemes and coverage of more and more population under water supply schemes is going on with full swing. Under the minor irrigation sector 751 projects have been taken up in hand during the last four years and an amount of over Rs. 1630 crores stands incurred on these. Over 405 minor irrigation schemes have been completed by the end of this year. The first phase of Tral Lift Irrigation Scheme has been completed and the project is on fast track at a cost of Rs. 140.76 crores to cater to the area of about 6000 hectares for which irrigation potential has been created. Work on Rs. 70.20 crores Rajpora Lift Irrigation Schemes, Rs. 49.59 crores Dadi Canal and Construction of Tawi Lake is under full swing besides 20 flood protection and anti-erosion works involving Rs. 301 crores. |
