| 1.42 lakh labourers registered in JK; ` 185 cr cess collected | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Jan 8 : Jammu and Kashmir has 1.42 lakh registered labourers who will be provided with all basic facilities, including health care, insurance besides education to their children. Jammu and Kashmir Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board (JKBOCWWB) has collected Rs 185 crore cess in the state which will be utilised for the welfare of the labourers. Commissioner cum Secretary, Labour, Yedullah said Rs 32 crore has been released for various schemes related to registered construction workers while Rs 26 crore has been spent on welfare schemes, covering 21,000 beneficiaries. The amount of ex-gratia relief has been doubled from Rs one lakh to Rs two lakh in case of death of a registered construction labourer. Besides, the widow of the deceased labour shall get a monthly pension of Rs 2,250 from Board so that the bereaved family is not left in the lurch under these circumstances. Yedullah hoped that revision of minimum wages with effect from January one would encourage the labour class to work with dedication and zeal. The current wages of un-skilled labourer have been enhanced from Rs 110 to Rs 150 for semi-skilled from Rs 150 to Rs 175 for skilled, Rs 200 to Rs 225 and for ministerial and supervisory staff from Rs 175 to Rs 200. The government is contemplating to introduce skill development in labour class and enhance their opportunities of employability in and outside the country so that the quality of life standards of labourers is improved besides making them self reliant to live a dignified life. |
