2/19/2007 9:36:11 PM

Jammu | February 19
More than two weeks after the famous Raghunath market in Jammu was declared out of bounds for motorists by the traffic department shopkeepers, bank customers, tourists, and regular visitors are facing many hardships.
The Raghnunath market houses big showrooms, bank branches, cinema hall, doctor’s clinic, tourist market, eating points and various other business establishments and witnesses’ huge rush of consumers throughout the day.
Owners of business establishments, regular bank customers and those who regularly come for shopping in the high profile market are the worst sufferers. Ever since the ban was imposed on the movement of four wheelers through the market majority of businessmen are recording lesser footfalls in their shops as compared to the previous arrangement wherein parking was allowed in the main bazaar.
“Quantum of business has been witnessing a marginal decline as some percentage of the customers who were not able to visit the market due to traffic restrictions are opting for other markets”, a prominent businessmen running a big showroom of wedding items told visiting team of Kashmir Independent Press.
Feeling the pinch of the ban, the Raghunath Bazar Businessmen Association (RBBA) has already brought this issue in to the notice of the traffic department stating that traffic restrictions for entry of all sorts of vehicles in Raghunath Bazar has been causing hardships to consumers and all others who visited the market. “We have also demanded traffic department to reconsider present arrangement and find out ways to regulate flow of traffic through the busy market, the association members maintained.
“We are facing many hardships as we have to visit bank branches in connection with regular business. Some time we carry huge cash with us and want to drive down ina private vehicle than moving on foot. But under the present arrangement we have no choice but to take the risk, a businessmen who is currently running bank account sin busy Raghunath market said.
Secondly the Raghunath market houses large number of clinics of doctors and sometimes it is difficult for a patient to walk on foot but no remedial measures have been suggested by the department to address the issue. Besides tourist vehicles are also not allowed inside the Raghunath market and footfalls have decreased in the last couple of weeks. Contrary to this the adjacent Hari Market in the same area is witnessing increasing rush of tourists and are offering competitive prices to lure away the customers from the Raghunath market.
