160 stranded students in Kheda district rescued

Ahmedabad, Aug 02: All 160 children stranded in a school surrounded by flood water in Kheda district for the past four days, were finally rescued on Wednesday. The children were rescued with the help of CRPF officers, who took the children to safer places on their shoulders. Meanwhile, fresh spell of heavy rains hit Gujarat after a day`s respite while 55,000 people were evacuated from flood-hit areas.

IAF helicopters were pressed into service to rescue the kids.

State Reserve Police personnel, led by District Superintendent of Police, reached near the school in boats as part of efforts to rescue the children. The children were trapped for the last four days in a big hall on the first floor of boarding school in Bharwada village in Kheda district.

The boarding school is situated next to a big canal. Due to heavy rains, the canal was flooded and waters surrounded the school. Due to rapid flow of water it was difficult to reach them.

Narmada Dam overflows

Sardar Sarovar, one of the biggest dams in the country, the height of which was recently increased to 119 meters started overflowing and more than 55,000 people staying along the banks of River Narmada have been evacuated to safer places.

The Sardar Sarovar Dam is overflowing at the height of 119.11 meters, control room officials said.

"We have given warning to the villages on the bank of River Narmada in Bharuch district that water is being released in the river," Resident Deputy Collector J B Solanki said.

Meanwhile, heavy rains were recorded in Bhanskanta Taluka of North Gujarat in the last 24 hours ending 0800 hours, state flood control room official said. Moderate rains was also recorded in other districts of North Gujarat like Sabarkantha and Mehasana, officials said.

Fresh flood alert in Pune, 1,000 shifted in Kolhapur

A fresh flood alert was issued last night for the low-lying areas of Pune City even as around 1,000 people were shifted to safer places in nearby Kolhapur district.

"A fresh flood alert was issued for the low-lying areas of Pune City after the discharge from Khadakwasla Dam increased upto 45,000 cusecs (cubic feet per second)," Resident Deputy Collector of Pune Suhas Divse said today.

Following increased discharge from Khadakwasla Dam and heavy rainfall yesterday, many areas in Pune were once again inundated, forcing the people to move out of their homes from localities such as Pulachiwadi, Patil estate etc.

District authorities in Kolhapur said that the people were shifted as a precautionary measure.

"Not much rains have occurred in Kolhapur in the past 12 hours yet as a precautionary measure we shifted some 1,000 people last night from different places in the district," Resident Deputy Collector Milind Pathak said.

He said that Shirul and Hathkangla were the two worst-hit talukas of the district following floods in Krishna River, adding that Panchganga River at Rajaram Bhandara in Kolhapur City was below danger mark.

Earlier, the district administration had shifted some 11,000 people because of floods, according to District Collector Praveen Darade.
