BJP seeks anti-terror bill in budget session
2/19/2007 9:59:48 PM

NEW DELHI | FEB 19
The main Opposition BJP on Monday demanded a POTA-type law to deal with terrorism blaming the deadly explosions on a link train to Pakistan on the ruling UPA's handling of the menace.

"The bomb blasts in the train from Delhi to Attari go to show that terrorists are still operating and are in command. The UPA government's approach lacks a concerted policy to tackle terrorists," senior party leader L K Advani said.

He referred to National Security Adviser M K Narayanan's recent comments in Munich about manipulation of stock markets by terror groups to generate funds and calling them a matter of serious concern.

"The BJP feels that the UPA government should adopt zero tolerance policy against terrorism," he said.

BJP chief Rajnath Singh said the government should come out with a tougher law than POTA to deal with terror.

"The government should introduce a more stringent bill (than POTA) to tackle the scourge. We will give it our full support," he told a news conference here.

Singh, who also referred to Naryanan's remarks, noted that POTA had tough provisions to act against manipulation of financial institutions to generate funds for terror.

The BJP chief, who insisted that terror activities were being conducted from Pakistan, demanded New Delhi build up diplomatic pressure on Islamabad to honour its 2004 commitment against terrorism.

He also sent a team of party leaders Vijay Kumar Malhotra, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and Sahib Singh Verma to the scene.
