General body meet of ASHI
Collaboratory, participatory approach imperative for women empowerment: Lady Governor

JAMMU, FEBRUARY 20
To have better and modern facilities in Jagati, a shanty village near here adopted by Association for Social Health in India (ASHI), a comprehensive plan is envisaged with participation of various agencies. These include a sports stadium and improvement of rural sanitation, drinking water and other civic amentias.
First Lady of the State, Mrs Premini Sinha, President of the Jammu and Kashmir Chapter of ASHI told the annual general body meeting that concerted efforts would be made for accomplishing the tasks within stipulated time-frame. She appreciated the headway made in identifying 40 kanals of land for laying a stadium by Youth Services and Sports organisation and hoped that this will help in bridging rural-urban divide by ensuring facilities in the village.
Mr Sinha reviewed the functioning of the organization and progress made on various initiatives taken in recent months. She said that the works taken up in Jagati can be showcased for other agencies and organizations to emulate on a broader scale for improving the quality of life of ruralites. She lauded overwhelming and active response of the members of the ASHI in fructification of overarching goal of extending reach of ameliorative services to the marginalized people particularly women and children in distress. She also underscored the imperative of developing a collaborative and participatory approach for empowerment of the women for ensuing equality of opportunity.
The President appreciated that many activities have been carried out in the adopted Panchayat Jagati with the resources raised from the members and the contribution of the beneficiaries. She observed that this is symbolic of the participatory model for the empowerment of the marginalized people.
Senior Vice President, Ms Sushma Choudhry highlighted various programmes of activities undertaken by ASHI and their measurable social impact on socio-economic indices. She focused on institutional building in the adopted Panchayat for leveraging local resources, both physical and human for sustainable model of development. Accordingly, she added, Panchayat Development Committee has been constituted to plan, implement and oversee various activities.
Ms Choudhry said that ASHI has been catapulted into an effective platform for channelising and convergence of the efforts of various non-governmental agencies and philanthropic bodies.
Secretary ASHI, Prof Kailash Rajput informed the meeting that in the last one year uniforms, shoes, jerseys and sports material has been provided to the students of all the schools in Jagati. There has been discernible improvement in enrollment and quality of education, she maintained.
ASHI has planted 1400 fruit and medicinal plants and 470 mulberry trees with the help of locals. Training in Mushroom production and preparation of hand made paper bags has been imparted to women. Medical, veterinary and agricultural camps have been organized in the Panchayat.
The Lady Governor felicitated Secretary Home for Aged and Infirm, Mr Vijay Bargotra and a local entrepreneur Mrs Harjinder Kour for their generous support to ASHI. She also viewed photo exhibition “ASHI- a step forward: towards development’, highlighting the activities of the organization in Jagati.
