Abhay Sopori gets Jr. Sangeet Natak Academy Award

Abhay Rustum Sopori, the internationally acclaimed Santoor Maestro and Music Composer has been awarded the prestigious Sangeet Natak Academy’s first ‘Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar’ for the year 2006. The award has been constituted this year only and shall be given to prominent personalities every year for their contribution and achievements in performing arts. The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 25,000 along with a citation. The award ceremony shall be held later.
Abhay, the youngest Santoor Player of India, is the son of the Legendary Maestro Pt. Bhajan Sopori and grandson of Pt. S.N.Sopori (Hailed as father of Indian Classical Music in the Valley). The torch bearer of the exclusive traditional Santoor family of India and the representative of the ‘Sopori Baaj’, Abhay has performed in various National and International Festivals. The maker of ‘Aao Kadam Badhayain’, Abhay has the distinction of being the youngest classical musician to compose and conduct orchestras and folk ensembles. He has been honoured with several awards like the ‘Youngs India Award – 2006’ and ‘Kalawant Samman - 2004’ for his excellence in music as a Santoor Player and Music Composer. His innovations include ‘Open String concept’, ‘Sur Santoor’, etc. His recent music releases include path braking albums like ‘Shehjaar’, ‘Aalav’, ‘Runjhun’, ‘Nai Subha’, ‘Jannet-e-Kashmir’, etc.
Abhay commented on the occasion – “its an honour for me to have been awarded the most prestigious award of India in performing Arts for the younger generation. The award has been constituted this year only and shall be given for the first time. The very fact that I been selected for this award in the first list from all over India, is an honour in itself. The award is because of the blessing of all esp. my grandfather and father - my Guru’s Pt. S.N.Sopori ji & Pt. Bhajan Sopori ji. I also thank all the people of my State for their love and blessings.”
