Charak announces 143 road projects under PMGSY

Jammu, February 21
To provide road connectivity to unconnected habitations of the state, Minister for R&B Mr. Gulchain Singh Charak today announced that Rs 500 crore for 143 road projects under PMGSY in the 5th phase and said that all these projects would be completed upto 2009.
He was inaugurating new office complex of PMGSY at Channi Himat. A separate wing for PMGSY with full-fledged staff was created in October 2006 with one Chief Engineer, three Superintending Engineers at Jammu, Kashmir and Batote with 13 divisions at different headquarters of the districts, he added.
He said after the creation of PMGSY wing, a Detailed Project Reports (DPR’s) involving Rs 1500 crore have been prepared in the first instance.
Mr. Charak appealed all the legislators to cooperate the department so that all these projects would be completed in a stipulated time. He directed the Chief Engineer to consult the legislators wherever works were executed under this scheme. He said the involvement of legislators is necessary for implementation of mega projects.
Mr. Charak directed the Chief Engineer PMGSY to start work on warfooting basis in all the newly created 13 divisions of the wing as early as possible, so that funds allocated to the schemes are utilized judiciously and to completed works prescribed time frame.
The Minister also directed the new team of engineers to work with zeal and dedication to complete this mega task taken in hand by the government to provide better road connectivity of difficult terrain’s of rural habitation of the State.
While giving the details of the PMGSY scheme, Chief Engineer PMGSY said that an amount of Rs 4000 crore were earmarked for connectivity of 2057 unconnected habitations with a population of 1000 plus and 500 plus including 415 habitations with population of less than 500.
He said the scheme was launched in 2000 and the job was first entrusted to rural engineering wing (REW) of state by taking 36 projects with a cost of Rs 21.81 crore in hand in all districts out of which 91.05 percent works stands completely under first phase whileas under phase 2nd phase 66 number of projects at a cost of Rs 58.88 crore were taken in hand under out of which 77 percent stands completed. Similarly under 3rd phase 66 number of projects at a cost of Rs 91.26 crore would be taken through PWD out of which 53 percent of works stands completed whileas under phase 4th, 108 projects at a cost of Rs 144.41 crore were taken with same agency are in progress to connect unconnected habitations of the state, he added. He said under phase 4th, 2 projects were taken daily in hand upto ending March 2007.
The others who were present on the occasion included Chief Engineer R&B and other senior officers and engineers of the R&B of PMGSY departments.
Earlier, Minister inaugurated the multi-purposes hall at Government High School Dogra Hall Jammu constructed at a cost of Rs 4 lakh. He assured the school authority that other demands of the school would also be met in a phased manner.
