| Qazi for popularizing cultivation of medicinal plants | | | Jammu, February 21 Stressing the need for cultivating medicinal and aromatic plants in the state on a large scale, the Minister for Forests, Environment, Housing and Urban Development Qazi Mohammad Afzal has said that the geographic and climatic conditions of the state are ideal for the growth of such plants. He further said that in this regard state government would take all necessary steps to boost this type of cultivation in the state particularly in the higher reaches of Himalya’s. He was speaking at inaugural function of 2-day workshop on cultivation of medicinal plants organized by the State Forest Research Institute in collaboration with Himalayan Forest Research Institute, Shimla here today. Minister said that forests, which are natural habitat for such plants are in abundance in Jammu and Kashmir need to be preserved and conserved. Qazi Afzal while appreciating the organizers for conducting such training camps hoped that the trainees would carry forward knowledge that they inculcate during the camp to aware general masses in this regard. He also stressed that the need for imparting training to all the officers at a gross route level. Speaking on the occasion, Minister of State for Forests Mr. Aijaz Ahmad Khan said that forests of J&K are full of medicinal plants and these need to be utilized in a proper way. He said that the government contemplates to boost the cultivation of medicinal plants in all areas where climatic conditions suit for the purpose. He said necessary incentives and technical know-how would also be provided for their cultivation. Mr. Aijaz enjoined upon the officers and experts of the department to launch such awareness camps in hilly and far-off areas and educate people about the cultivation, preservation and benefits of these plants so that the unemployed educated youth could come to this field and earn livelihood by cultivation of medicinal plants. Secretary, Forests Mr. Attal Dulloo, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Mr. Irshad Ahmed Khan, Director, Himalyan Forest Research Institute, Shimla Mr. K.S. Kapoor, Deputy Director General Extraction, Dr. Rivender Kumar, Director, State Forest Research Institute,Dr. S. M. Seith were also spoke on the occasion and high lighted the potential for medicinal cultivation in the state. Later, Qazi Afzal and Mr. Aijaz inaugurated two buildings included Scientists Guest House and Office of the Conservator of Forest, Research Circle which were completed at a cost of Rs.16.5 lakhs. Among others, Director Forest Protection Force Mr. Vinod Ranjan, Managing Director, State Forest Corporation Mr. Ayjaz Ahmed Khan, Chief Conservator of Forests, Jammu Mr.Abhay Kumar, Senior Officers and field staff of various wings of the Forests Department attended the function. |
