Govt to envisage herb cultivation in forest policy

Jammu, Feb 21
Notwithstanding its claims of promoting cultivation of medicinal plants on commercial scale and including it in new forest policy, the government has yet to prepare the list of the medicinal plants found in the state.
The disclosure was made at the inaugural function of two day workshop on the cultivation of medicinal plants, where speakers presented a gloomy picture of the degrading eco-system of the state, apprehending ‘total annihilation, if the present trend continues’.
The workshop organized by the State Forest Research Institute in collaboration with forest research institute Shimla was inaugurated by minister for Forests Qazi Mohammad Afzal in presence of Minister of state for forest Ajaz Ahmad Khan.
Expressing deep concern over the fast degenerating state ecology, speakers which include some within the forest department apprehended “nothing would be left after ten years if we fail to arrest the present trend of over exploitation of natural recourses”. The medicinal plants which are found in the forests would also disappear in the absence of the suitable ecology, the speakers’ declared.
The officials announced that the government is keen to promote of cultivation of the medicinal plants on commercial basis and its inclusion in the new forest policy. However it was made out that the state has not yet prepared the inventory of the medicinal plants found in the potential area of the state.
Stressing for switching over to sustainable development, the speakers called for introduction of technical know how to tap the potential of the cultivation of the medicinal plants. They also stressed for extending market support to the cultivators of the herbs. (NAK)

15 day basic skiing course concludes
Gulmarg, Feb 21 (NAK): The fifteen day Jammu and Kashmir basic skiing course organized by Jammu and Kashmir sports council Baramulla at world famous tourist resort Gulmarg concluded here today. During the course 33 skiing learners were trained in basic and intermediate skiing skills.
Sports officer Kashmir for Mohammed Sayeed Baba was chief guest at the Valedictory function.
Covered with white thick blanket of snow Gulmarg has been witness unprecedented inflow of tourists. The snow clad shining slopes of Gulmarg wore a dashing look with everywhere snow sports lovers busy in varied games being played on snow.
Speaking on the occasion Sports officer Kashmir Mohammed Syed Baba said that Jammu and Kashmir sports council despite having huge some funds at its disposal have not been able to organize other snow sports courses due to lack of accommodation at tourist resorts.
He said, “We have been trying our level best to prepare our local youth who have potential to do best but lack of accommodation mars our efforts with heavy expenses as we have to hire hotels for the accommodation."
He added that amount of 38 lack rupees was drawn every month from state exchequer for promoting the sports while regretting "our activities are not worth mentioning as we have yet to do a lot."
Earlier while welcoming the guests, Manger sports council Baramulla Sheikh Mustaq said that at district level sports council has been trying its best to bring the rural talent to the fore front so that they can participate at national and international level. And "The aim of organizing such skiing courses is to encourage rural youth."
Later, prizes were distributed among the participants who performed well during the course both in basic and intermediate skills.
