| Guv evinces interest in Wadoo’s works | | | Jammu, February 22 Governor Lt. Gen. (Retd) S. K. Sinha has appreciated Mr. M. S. Wadoo for discovering world’s largest and oldest Chinar at Chattergam-Chadoora near Srinagar. Mr. Wadoo author of 11 books on trees and plants of Jammu and Kashmir today presented the Governor his recent book “The trees of our Heritage” at Rajbhavan. The book is high value research work on trees and forests of Jammu and Kashmir. Evincing great interest in the high class research work of Mr. Wadoo, presented in the book, Mr. Sinha asked various questions on growth age and origin of Chinar tree to Mr. Wadoo. He said Chinar has basically brought to Kashmir from Greece but has assumed the Persian name Chinar, though in Kashmir, it is known as Bune. He said it can live upto 900 years if atmosphere and nurturing is conduce. He said reference of Bune is in “Lal Wakhs” which determining that Chinar existed in Kashmir before Mugals. Explaining his research profile on trees of J&K, Mr. Wadoo told Governor that he has traveled thousands of miles to ascertain, identify and establish largest and oldest Chinar of the world at Chattergam in the mosque area of Syed Qasim Shah (RA) having the girth of 31.85 meters at ground level and 14.78 at breast height. Earlier, a Chinar tree at Bijbehara with ground level girth of 19.70 meters and breast height girth of 13.30 meters was considered largest Chinar tree before the discovery of Mr. Wadoo. Mr. Wadoo told Governor that his research work compiled in a book “the trees of our heritage” include information on various growing aspects of Deodar, Bren, Willows and poplars. Later, speaking to media persons Mr. M. S. Wadoo said “forests with its trees, its bushes and leaves and its beauty are imbibed in my blood nerves and the soul. I would not like to speak about myself as I have devoted my life in conveying the massage of forests. My all books, projects and plans, news letters and articles, speak themselves about my keen interest in this field”. He said “heritage in a general sense, a sense of owing anything that is or may be inherited by us from our ancestors and the book “THE TREES OF OUR HERITAGE” include the forest trees represented by the king of forest i.e Deodar - depicting the whole history of forests including the forest management practices. The Bune/Chinar – the glory of our gardens and parks, roads and rides. THE BREN/ KAIN OR Marali – the tree of our saints, Sufis and Sadus; who attained their spiritual upliftment under the shade of these trees, and Salicales i.e Salix or willows and poplars – the quick growing multipurpose trees of valley. He said, “I have kept on record the discovery of the sacred, the grand, the oldest, the biggest (in girth and height) living Bune, Chinar Tree in the village Chattergam, Tehsil Chadoora, district, Budgam, Kashmir having a girth of 31.85 meters at ground level and 14.78 meters at breast height on bark (BHOB). Since the biggest Chinars do grow in the J&K State alone, therefore our state gets the status of having the biggest Chinar on the surface of the earth at Chattergam”. “At this occasion in presence of intellectuals and, I feel that it is my moral duty to warn that if appropriate action is not taken to arrest wanton destruction of trees and forests our part of the globe called ‘heaven on earth’ will turn into a desert of sand and stones and finally to a dead land of Mahanjadaro and Harrapa” he said. |
