| Stage set for All India Inter-varsity Korfball | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Feb 18: The Directorate of Sport and Physical Education of the University of Jammu (JU) is all set to host the six-day All India Inter-University Korfball Championship on the campus from February 20. With fixtures already drawn for the 18 participating teams, representing different universities of the country, JU has set in place the needed infrastructure for conducting the competition. "The grounds have been made ready for the practice of the teams reaching in advance. Since, one of the participating university has reported us today, we are sure that majority of the participants, who are supposed to play on the opening day, shall arrive by tomorrow evening," organizing secretary of the championship, Director Sports, Prof Dhian Singh Bhau told SAN. "Around 450 boys and girls representing 18 universities of the country are expected to take part in this championship on knock-out basis," further said Prof Bhau. Earlier, on the basis of their rankings, four top teams, including hosts JU, have been placed in such a manner by the fixture committee that they will be directly playing at the quarterfinals level in opening knock-out round. Teams getting bye in the initial rounds are University of Delhi (group-A), Osmania University (group-B), MDU Rohtak (group-D) and host JU (group-C). As per the laid down fixture, after the three-day knock-out round, the four qualified teams shall be facing each other in the league round, starting from February 23, to decide the champion. Two last league round matches have been scheduled for the last day of the competition i.e. February 25. The competition shall be held following the rules of Korfball Federation of India duly adopted by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). |
