BJP reminds Kasuri of Pak's anti-terror pledge
2/23/2007 10:50:48 PM
NEW DELHI:
Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, whose government initiated the peace process with Islamabad, on Thursday reminded Pakistan of its pledge that it would not allow anti-terror activities from its soil.

He told visiting Pakistan Foreign Minister Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri, who called on him at his residence in New Delhi, that issues between the two countries should not be resolved in haste.

Former External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha, who was present at the hour-long meeting along with former National Security Advisor Brajesh Mishra, told reporters that Vajpayee expressed his support to the peace process, but recalled that there was a condition in talks with President Pervez Musharraf that Pakistan would dismantle terror camps there.

"He reminded him that there should be an end to cross-border terrorism. On his part, Kasuri said his country too was suffering from terror," Sinha remarked.

The BJP leader, however, said his party did not subscribe to Kasuri's remarks his country also was a terror victim.

"Vajpayee told Kasuri that there should be peace and cross-border terror eliminated," Sinha said.

During his meeting with the former Prime Minister, Kasuri insisted that his country was not executing the SAFTA pact because it did not want to act in haste, Sinha added.

The Pakistani leader also invited Vajpayee to Pakistan as he praised him for his peace process initiatives, the BJP leader said.

A meeting scheduled for early Thursday between senior BJP leader Jaswant Singh and the Pakistani minister did not take place. Singh was also not present at Kasuri's meeting with Vajpayee.
