| Separatists issue fresh calendar; stone pelting continues | | | Javaid Naikoo Jammu, Feb 18: Separatist faction led by Syed Ali Geelani, who has been put under house arrest at his Delhi residence today issued a fresh protest calendar against the hanging of Muham-mad Afzal Guru, Parliament attack convict. In the revised calendar, The hardliner separatist factions have called on the people to observe shutdown, stage protests and torch rallies after prayers till February 22. Meanwhile fresh violence occurred in the southern towns of Pulwama and Shopian resulting in the stone pelting and re-imposition of restrictions by the authorities. In Pulwama town, people came on the roads this morning and started shouting anti India slogans and pelting stones on security forces, later district authorities swung into action and re-deployed the forces and in retaliation security forces fired tear gas shells and used cane charge to disperse the stone pelters. Likewise in some parts of Shopian, ding dong battles between security forces and protesting youth were reported. The protests which first started near the DC office later spread to other areas of the town including Bonabazar and main chowk areas as well. Locals alleged that police arrested some youth from the area after clashes broke out this morning, but on contacting, station house officer shopian Irshad Ahmad denied any arrests. He added that some school going boys who were pelting stones were handed over to their parents and nobody is arrested or detained for stone pelting. |
