| Congress leaders begin mounting pressure on Union Govt | | Option to return Guru's body to his parents not closed yet | | Early Times Report Jammu, Feb 18: Finding itself on a weak wicket in the Kashmir valley following the execution of the Parliament attack convict Mohd Afzal Guru, the top leaders of the state unit of the Congress party have begun mounting pressure on the Union government to concede the demand of Guru's family for returning his body. Party sources said that a number of leaders in the All India Congress Committee (AICC) too have started persuading the party high command to handover Guru's body to his family members which could help the state unit of the party in Kashmir to prevent the organisation from suffering further erosion. According to the party sources the Union government has kept the option for handing over Guru's body to his parents open. However, since it is not sure about the turn of events that could shape themselves in the valley once the body would be back to Kashmir, the centre continues to weigh all the pros and cons. The centre had conveyed its willingness to allow the family to offer prayers at the grave, which was subsequently rejected by the latter. Reports, said that after a strong reaction in the valley over his hanging and the way it was executed, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has himself taken over the control to monitor the situation on daily basis. Since Dr Singh was unhappy at the manner the family was kept in the dark, sources said the situation was being followed closely. Since Kashmir has been raging over the issue particularly the way the family was not allowed the last meeting nor was it able to perform the last rites, the pressure is being mounted within the government by some key people who have been involved in Kashmir's "Track II business" as also the leaders of Pradesh Congress Committee who feel completely isolated in this situation. Reports said that those who matter in the central Government were not opposed to handing over Guru's body to his family members if top political leaders, belonging to the mainstream and separatist segments, gave an assurance to the Government of India that the situation may not register any alarming dimensions in case the body was sent back to Kashmir. |
