| ‘Illegal transportation of Pashmina’ | | Timely Vigilance action leads to recovery of over Rs.8.45 lakh | | Jammu | Feb 23 Deputy Commissioner Commercial Taxes (Vigilance and Inspection) Kashmir imposed a penalty of Rs.4, 22, 250/- on a firm M/s Altaf & Brother, Nowpora, Srinagar for evading Sales Tax and transporting raw Pashmina from Leh to Srinagar illegally. In addition to the fine, the firm deposited an equal amount as security for under valuation of the material. Giving details a Vigilance spokesman said today that on January 30 last, the firm M/s Altaf & Brother transported 1250 kgs of raw Pashmina from Leh to Srinagar through Indian Air Lines flight No IC 447 to evade the sales xax. However, acting on an input the officers of the State Vigilance Organization, Kashmir, with the assistance of Sales Tax Department carried out a joint surprise check and took cognizance of the matter under rules. Finally, the SVO referred the matter to the Additional Commissioner Commercial Taxes, Srinagar, for appropriate action. The defaulter firm deposited Rs.8.45 lakhs in the Government account in J&K Bank Residency Road Branch Srinagar, on February 12 last as penalty / security for the attempted evasion of tax, thus the timely action by the Department led to the recovery of nearly Rs. nine lakhs.
