Jammu, Feb 23
Another instance of police atrocity came to light today when an Assistant Sub Inspector allegedly beat a Housing Corporation employee to death. It is the third incident during the ongoing month in which a civilian has been reportedly killed by Police in Jammu region. Meanwhile, the accused ASI has been arrested and proceedings under CrPC 174 have been initiated against him.
According to reports, an ASI Lal Chand posted in Gharota Police Station beat the employee deputed by the corporation as chowkidar at a piece of land in Gharota. The employee who felt unconscious was later shifted to Sarwal Hospital from where he was referred to Government Medical College (GMC). The doctors at GMC declared him as brought dead.
Sources said that the ASI beat the deceased identified as Kewal Ram, son of Gopal Nath of Gurha Keran, Barnai to death after the former objected his presence at the disputed land. Sources said that the Corporation had a dispute with some locals over the land and the case was sub judicious.
The ASI was reportedly deputed to facilitate the measurement of land along with a team of revenue officials who on finding the Chowkidar there after a brief exchange of hot words thrashed him to death.
However the police have a different story to tell claiming that the person died of cardiac arrest. Giving details of the incident, SSP Jammu Mukesh Singh told that according to one eyewitness the Chowkidar indulged in a verbal dual with the ASI and two revenue officials who were deputed by the department for measuring the piece of land. In the meantime the Chowkidar developed some complication and felt unconscious after which he was taken to Sarwal Hospital. The Doctors after giving treatment discharged the Chowkidar who was taken back to his residence. He said however after two hours the deceased was brought by his family to GMC after he again complained of chest pain where he breathed his last. “The ASI has been detained for questioning” he added
Meanwhile, the relatives of the deceased have alleged that he was beaten to death by the ASI.
