Indo-Canadian cooperation vital for world peace: Governor

Governor Lt. Gen (Retd) S K Sinha today appreciated the endeavours being made by Jammu University in having linkage with Canadian Universities for binding academic and cultural bonds.
Inaugurating 3-day International Conference on Canadian Studies in university campus here this morning, Governor reminded the high class gathering about various commonalities between India and Canada and said that both the countries were mutli-cultural, multi-linguistic and secular committed to the cause of world peace.
General Sinha, who is also the Chancellor of Jammu University, expressed happiness over launching of a course in Canadian literature in collaboration with a Canadian University and hoped that this will go a long way in exposing students to wider canvass in this era of globalization and knowledge explosion.
‘In this era of globalization boundaries and barriers are becoming irrelevant’, he said, adding that the concept of world as a global village emanates from the great Indian ethos of Vasudeva Kutumkam. Ancient Indian seers have been professing this concept since time immemorial, for promoting brotherhood and universal peace, he added.
Governor said that India and Canada have played a vital role in promoting peace international detente. In fact, both the nations have fought to defend democracy and played significant role as United Nation’s members.
Elaborating on similarities between the two countries, Governor said that Canada pioneered a concept of self-governing dominion which was followed by Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Similarly, India pioneered the formation of Common Wealth. He said the two countries also worked for nurturing parliamentary democracy with federal structure. ‘In the backdrop of so many similarities, it was a wise decision of Indian Parliament to set up Shastri Indo- Canadian Institute (SICI)’, the Governor said.
The Governor said he was very impressed by the programme worked out for different sessions of the 3-day conference and hoped that the delegates from various parts of the country and Canada will deliberate threadbare on these. He wished resounding success to the conference and congratulated the Vice Chancellor and his team for organising such a big event.
Canadian High Commissioner in India, Mr David Malone, Minister for Tourism, Flood Control and Horticulture, Mr Mohammed Dilawar Mir, Secretary and Treasurer SICI, Prof Brij M Sinha and Vice Chancellor, Jammu University, Prof Amitabh Mattoo were among those who spoke on the occasion.
The dignitaries were presented mementos while the Governor and the Canadian High Commissioner released a souvenir together. The students of the university presented Saraswti Vandna to mark the occasion.
In all 160 delegates from all over India and other parts of the world along with 30 local participants are attending the Conference in Brigadier Rajinder Singh Auditorium of Jammu University. The conference has been jointly organised by Indian Association for Canadian Studies and Centre for New Literatures of Jammu University. The Director of the Centre, Prof Posh Charak coordinated the event.
