ET Plus report
Jammu, Mar 2: Working chief of the Panthers Party Harsh Dev Singh and senior BJP leader Ashok Khajuria have held collation government responsible for rising number of deaths in road accidents in the state during the last three years which have been higher than in the militancy related violence.
They said that the number of casualties in the road accidents has been higher than the deaths caused by militants during the last three years. In support of their contention that more people die in road accidents than because of disease they have cited the latest Government report. According to the report more than 4,000 people have lost their lives in nearly 25000 road accidents across Jammu and Kashmir since 2009. The report said that during the last four years, 25495 road mishaps were reported from various parts of the state. These mishaps led to the death of 4453 persons and injuries to around 36920 others. The highest number of road mishaps were reported in Chenab valley region of Jammu comprising three districts of Kishtwar, Doda and Ramban. "During this period 2401 accidents were reported in erstwhile Doda district, in which 823 persons lost their lives and 3700 persons were injured," the report said.
Harsh Dev said that poor development of roads especially the ones that link Doda, Kishtwar, Bhaderwah, Ramban with Jammu is one of the factors responsible for increased number of road accidents. He suggested to the Government to undertake immediate programme regarding upgrading and widening these mountain roads.
He said lack of supervision has allowed a large number of bus operators to ply road unworthy vehicles even on mountain routes which usually results in road accidents.
Harsh said that overloading and rash driving continue to be two other f actors that cause fatal road accidents. He said that strict measures be introduced for checking overloading rash driving and for ensuring road worthy passenger transport services on the mountain routes. He said there was also the need for increasing the number of buses on each route so that neither the drivers nor the passengers were forced to resort to overloading.
