| 3-day international conference on ‘Cosmopolitanism’ commences at JU | | | Jammu | Feb 23 The three day International Conference on Canadian Studies on the topic ‘Cosmopolitanism: Canada and India’ commenced today at the Jammu University today. Speaking on the occasion, Lt. General S K Sinha said that the history of Indo-Canadian ties goes back to the times when both the countries were the colonies of British empire and added that Canada pioneered a new concept by introducing the idea of self-governing dominion which was later on followed by the countries like Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. He also mentioned that during the freedom struggle of India in the early 20th century many revolutionaries got asylum in Canada and they faced no discrimination there. Highlighting Jammu University’s ties with Canadian culture, the Governor said that the University of Jammu has started a PG Course on Canadian Literature and shortly there is a plan to introduce a course on Culture in collaboration with the University of Calgary, Canada. He concluded on the note that the ongoing collaborations are the result of all those enlightened minds for whom World is one big family. This conference is being organized by Centre for New Literatures, University of Jammu in association with the Indian Association for Canadian Studies (IACS) and it is 23rd International Conference organized by the IACS. In his address, Chief Guest British High Commissioner in India David M Malone highlighted the various similarities between India and Canada. He further stated that the closeness between the two countries is evident from the fact that a large chunk of Canadian population is of Indian origin, more than any other country. Speaking on the occasion, the guest of honour, Minister for PHE, Irrigation & Flood Control and Tourism & Horticulture, Dilawar Mir suggested that the University of Jammu in collaboration with the Canadian Universities should also explore the possibilities of introducing special courses on Tourism and Horticulture. In his presidential address Prof Amitabh Mattoo said that the topic of Cosmopolitanism is very much relevant not only to an academic point of view but also as a nation state and added that there are different aspects of cosmopolitanism including political, cultural and economic issues. He further stated that the University of Jammu is heading forward in the right direction to become a cosmopolitan Institution by entering into multifaceted ties with various Canadian institutes. Earlier, Governor of J&K and Chancellor, Lt. General S.K. Sinha (Retd.), PVSM inaugurated the conference at the Brig. Rajinder Singh Auditorium in university campus. David M. Malone, The High Commissioner of Canada in India was the Chief Guest while Dilawar Mir, Minister for PHE, Irrigation & Flood Control and Tourism & Horticulture was the Guest of Honour on the occasion. Prof. Amitabh Mattoo, Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu presided over the function. Others who spoke on the occasion included Prof. Braj M. Sinha, Secretary, Shastri Indo- Canadian Institute; Dr. R. K. Dhawan, President IACS and Dr. Chandra Mohan, Advisor, International Higher Education, University of Jammu. The souvenir of the conference was also released by Governor SK Sinha and High Commissioner of Canada in India. Prof. Posh Charak, Director Centre for New Literatures and Conference Coordinator made the welcome address whereas Dr D K. Pabby, Secretary IACS presented the formal vote of thanks.
