| Protest against police brutality in Bantalab | | | Jammu, February 24 Angry protests erupted in Bantalab area on the outskirts of Jammu on Saturday morning against the local police force after a local resident, an employee of the JK Cooperative Housing Corporation, died on Friday evening after he was allegedly thrashed by a police cop while he was on duty. Taking cognizance of the volatile situation in the area district administration had deployed large number of police force in the area sine early morning. Angry youth attacked police force and fought pitched battles resorting to stone pelting. Two vehicles, a water tanker and a CRPF gypsy was damaged by the protestors during the three hour long demonstrations. To bring normalcy in the area police later resorted to use of teargas shells and also fired more than one dozen rounds of bullets to disperse the mob.Family members of the deceased were joined by the furious local residents who were demanding action againt the errant cop and registration of the case of murder.Police had already constituted an inquiry and investigations were going on.Meanwhile to pacify the angry protestors police announced that education of all the children would be funded from the police fund. It may be mentioned that Kewal Ram,42, son of Gopal Das, residents of Lane number 11 Gurah Keran on Barnai-Bantalab road, who was serving as Chowkidar in Jammu & Kashmir Co-operative Housing Corporation office Gandhi Nagar died hours after he was reportedly thrashed by the ASI of the Gharota police station Lal Chand.Kewal had reportedly complained of chest pain hours after he was beaten up by the cop near Mishriwalla where he had gone to assit revenue officials for their routine work related to mapping of the project site.
