Former Director General Police and Chairman, J&K IIPA Dr Ashok Bhan was the chief guest and presented inaugural address on the occasion. The seminar has been organised by the MIER College of Education in collaboration with the Vichar Kranti Manch International whose president S K Jain was the Guest of Honour. Eminent educationist and chairman MIER group of institutions Dr Arun K Gupta described Dr Bhan as a role model for the youth as he had rendered unblemished service spanning 34 years in different high positions and had won reputation for rendering an honest and meritorious public service. Touching upon the topic of the seminar Gupta observed that the event would prove to be a milestone in the direction of setting up a Centre of Human Rights and Value Education in the MIER College with the support of the University Grants Commission (UGC). He informed the audience that the UGC has already approved the starting of a value added diploma programme on human rights and moral values in the college from the ensuing session. Dr Gupta observed that the theme of the seminar was significant in the light of global scenario as the present day system of higher education has largely failed to produce future citizens with necessary skills, confidence, competencies and commitment while the system of teaching learning and evaluation in the institutions of higher education left much to be desired. Dr Renu Gupta, Director MIER dwelt upon the theme of the seminar. She observed that injustice anywhere is a threat to those who deserve it. She remarked that while there are more than 100 reports at the national and international levels on human rights and values yet the implementation and impact of the recommendations left much to be desired. More than 60 participants drawn from different colleges are participating in the said seminar. S K Jain in his address, congratulated MIER for choosing the theme for deliberations as very few institutions ventured to discuss the vital issues of human rights and values publicly even though it was a much talked about theme at private level. Dr Bhan, in his inaugural address, raised issues concerning human rights and moral values which require much attention at different levels. Complimenting MIER for taking initiative to generate awareness and involving representatives of different sections of the society, he stressed upon the fact that there can be no better medium than education to redeem the present situation of despair, deprivation and discrimination. Dr Bhan elaborated his address by giving several instances in which police and other investigating agencies were unable to meet the expectations of public and observed that the police and other agencies required to beadequately staffed, equipped and trained to come up to the expectations of the public.Dr. Ashok Bhan advocated "neutral" moral education not based upon a particular religion in educational institutions and observed that such education could help individuals to take important decisions in the life when in crisis. He lauded the efforts of MIER to start a diploma in Human Rights and felt that making youth aware and educated will help the society to improve the situation as a whole. He left the audience with the message to become good human beings and quoted a couplet of famous Urdu poet Moulana Altaf Hussain Hali. "It is easier to become an angel while becoming good human being required a lot of hard work." |
