| Family await missing son for last 17 years | | | Srinagar | Feb 26 The recent fake encounter expose that came to light after police started investigating the disappearance case of a south Kashmir carpenter, Abdul Rehman Padder, has given hope to thousands of parents whose children have been missing since years, some of them as long as seventeen years. A case in point is the alleged disappearance of Manzoor Ahmad Zargar, then 22, hailing from Gojwara locality of Srinagar city. Relatives claim that Manzoor was picked up by jawans of BSF's 24 Battalion, then deployed in Srinagar, on the morning of July 15, 1990 from Gojwara Market where he was making some purchases. Manzoor has never returned home since then. As Manzoor did not turn up for days, the family lodged an FIR in Gojwara Police Station. But Manzoor was not to be found anywhere. "It was during this time that a person told us that Manzoor was under treatment in BSF Hospital Athwajan. As we took the case to high court and the person appeared in court stating that he had seen Manzoor being treated for multiple injuries in the hospital till 223/07/1990, BSF denied this saying that Manzoor had been released on 17/7/1990," says Manzoor's brother, Nazir Ahmad Zargar. The BSF authorities had, however, admitted that Manzoor was in their custody for some time. The family, that had lost all hope of finding Manzoor's whereabouts now sees a ray of hope after Padder's fake encounter came to light. "Why not investigate and at least tell us what happened to our brother," says Nazir. |
