Srinagar,Feb26
Reiterating her party's demand for demilitarisation and withdrawal special powers given to armed forces, People's Democratic party President, Mehbooba Mufti today expressed hope that the union India shall not dismiss their demands the same way that National Conference's autonomy proposal was rejected.
The PDP president, however, admitted that the coalition government has experienced a set back by the fake encounter cases that came to light recently while adding that it is the special powers given to the security forces that led the situation turn so bad.
"We have requested the central government to seriously consider the proposals that we are making," Mehbooba Mufti said addressing a news conference at her official residence in Srinagar, while adding "The ground situation has reached a stage where it becomes imperative for the central government to reduce troops and slash the special powers act to further confidence building in Jammu and Kashmir."
The PDP president, however, avoided answering the question that if she and her father were privy to all the decisions taken by the government of India regarding Kashmir and that if her party was garnering public support for the decision to demilitarize Kashmir already taken by the union government.
Justifying her party's demand for the demilitarisation, Mehbooba said that army and Border Security Force were occupying 50,000 and 55,000 canals of land illegally and for this the forces were paying no rent. In case of Ladakh, the PDP President said, that close to two lakh cansls of land were under the unauthorized occupation of security forces.
"Forces camps have rendered thousands of canals of cultivable land and orchards useless and cause people trouble as they need to divert routes due to forces camps," Mehbooba said. "When the army itself says that Kashmir can not be resolved militarily, what is the need of keeping the army here? Forces have done their job and brought the situation under control," Mehbooba said. The PDP President added that ARMY is called under extreme circumstances while the situation has improved manifold since coalition government took over.
Expressing satisfaction over the functioning of the coalition government, Mehbooba said that her party started to propose confidence building measures to the union government soon after coming to power and she was happy that most of the points raised by her party were included in the common minimum programme and later given a practical shape.
