| Cong emerges as single largest party in Manipur | | | IMPHAL, FEB 27 Manipur today headed for a hung Assembly with no party touching the magic figure of 31 as Congress emerged as the single largest party in 60-member House winning 25 seats out of the 53 results declared. Congress ally in the outgoing Secular Progressive Front government, CPI, won two seats. The two parties did not contest the elections as allies this time. Chief Minister O.Ibobi Singh who contested two Assembly seats -- Thoubal and Khangabok -- won both defeating MPP candidate L.Tomba Singh in the former and L. Jatra Singh in the latter. Manipur Congress chief Gaikhangam was declared elected from Nungba and senior Congress leader and forest minister Th.Debendra Singh from Jiribam. Former Medical minister Helaludin Khan, contesting on a RJD ticket, was declared elected from Lilong defeating Congress candidate and Speaker Mani Udin Khan. Hill-based United Naga Council (UNC)-sponsored independent candidate K.Wungnaoshing was declared elected from Phungyar constituency defeating Congress' Victor Keishing, son of former Chief Minister Rishang Keishing. The main opposition Manipur People's Party (MPP) won five seats. Independents won 10 seats. The National Congress Party won six and Rashtriya Janata Dal three seats. |
