| Pak to deploy additional troops along Afghan border | | | ISLAMABAD, FEB 28 Pakistan has said it would deploy additional forces along its border with Afghanistan to crack down on the al Qaeda and Taliban, two days after US Vice President Dick Cheney's surprise visit to the country to press for more action against the militant outfits.
Governor of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) Ali Mohammad Jan Aurakzai, who coordinates Pakistan's policy to crack down on al Qaeda and Taliban, has said that Islamabad is deploying additional forces along its border in the Waziristan tribal region with Afghanistan to re-inforce the present 80,000 troops deployed in the 2400km border between the two countries.
Arukzai made the announcement after meeting with British Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett in Peshawar yesterday. He said he was hopeful that Afghanistan would undertake similar measures on its side of the border, local daily 'Dawn' reported.
Cheney paid a surprise visit to Islamabad to hold talks with Musharraf two days ago that Islamabad would take whatever action necessary to prevent the Taliban from using its territory to fight against Afghanistan and curb "Talibanisation" in tribal areas.
Aurakzai, however, defended the North Waziristan agreement with Taliban which was criticised by the United States and said it had helped scale down cross-border movement considerably.
He briefed Beckett on the prevailing law and order situation in tribal areas with particular reference to the restive Waziristan region.
