Mr. Jain who is overseeing the airlift operation said that 1151 valley bound stranded passengers have been airlifted by the Air Force from Jammu to Srinagar by this evening. He said that on account of bad weather aircrafts from Udhampur could not take off in the morning, however, 310 passengers including 200 transported from Jammu to Udhampur have been airlifted to Srinagar in the afternoon making the total number of passengers airlifted to 1461. He said Army has made adequate arrangements including food and medicines for the passengers both at Udhampur and Srinagar. Divisional Commissioner said that arrangements have been finalized to airlift all stranded passengers for which Air Force has set in operation larger capacity aircrafts adding that only hurdle in smooth conduct of operation is the weather uncertainty which hampers normal flying of aircrafts. He said weather permitting airlifting operation would restart from 7.30 a.m. tomorrow. Meanwhile, Ministry of Defence through its press release has stated that Army has launched operation Hamsafar to provide necessary succour to stranded passengers. The release says that realizing the gravity of situation on account of heavy landslides at Panthal on Jammu-Srinagar national highway, Army alongwith Air Force stepped in to airlift passengers from Jammu and Udhampur to Srinagar “While the Air Force provided aircrafts, Army deployed its teams along with civil administration to assist stranded passengers. Initially in the morning 200 passengers were moved to Udhampur in Army buses to be airlifted to Srinagar who were later carried to Srinagar in Army planes”. It further states that Army has also established adhoc transit camp at Udhampur for reception of the passengers. Adequate refreshment, food and medical facilities have been arranged by Army alongwith sufficient accommodation both in Jammu and Srinagar. |
