| 5 QUESTIONS | | Dr. Kumkum Sharma, HoD, Blood Bank GMC, Jammu | | Q1: What’s the present daily requirement of blood in Government Medical College and its associated Hospital’s in Jammu? And how well Blood Bank is managing it? A: At present, 80-100 units of blood are daily required in Government Medical College and all its associated hospitals. Blood Bank is fully capable of meeting the requirements and we are managing the things quite well. But, we should be ready to pile up our resource for the disaster moments. Q2: It has been seen very commonly that, those having rare blood groups have to run helter and skelter for arranging the blood. How blood bank manages such situations? A: Yes, it’s a matter of great concern for all of us. Even such situations sometime become very challenging for us but, every problem has its solution. We have a Directory of the people having rare blood groups and are voluntary blood donors. In the hour of need we call them and arranges rare blood group for needy patients. Q3: How do you motivate people for blood donations as, it is the only way to accumulate blood for the further use? A: Awareness is the only way through which we can motivate people to donate blood voluntarily. They need to know that blood can’t be manufactured and it’s only a man who can help the other by the donation of his blood. Lots of awareness programmes are being run by the department to motivate people for the purpose and it’s very heartening that now large number of people is coming forward to strengthen our hands. Q4: How do you compare the technical facilities in the blood banks of Jammu with the blood banks of other reputed health institutions? A: To be very frank, blood banks of Jammu are equipped with the most advanced technical facilities. It can be even termed as one of the best in the north India. We have all the modern facilities in our blood banks including world class storage unit having the capacity of storing 2000 units of blood. Cell separation facility is also available in our blood bank. Q5: How do you feel after your nomination as an expert member in “Technical Resource Group” on blood safety by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt of India? A: It’s an honor for me to be nominated as an expert member in Technical Resource Group on blood safety. It adds to my responsibilities as, already I am looking after all the blood banks in this area. But, I will try my best to deliver the goods in my capacity.
