| Army evacuates accident victims in inclement weather | | | Jammu,March 01 Tragedy stuck on 26 February 2007 when a civilian bus hired by Army to carry its troops met with an accident near Mahore and went down a deep gorge. The troops from 15 Sector Rashtriya Rifles of Uniform Force rushed to the site for rescue operations. Twelve Army personnel’s and three civilians lost their lives while eight Army personnel and three civilians including the driver were injured. Inclement weather and heavy rains, leading to land slides in the area prevented any evacuation of the casualties thereafter. Next day a team of doctors from Talwara garrison with necessary life saving equipment walked upto Mahore for three hours in incessant rains to attend to the Army and civilians casualties. The Army and Air Force Helicopters were throughout on stand by, awaiting break in weather condition to evacuate the injured. Finally, on 28 February 2007, when weather slightly cleared up a MI-17 Helicopter of the Air Force made a daring sortie and evacuated six Army personnel’s and the injured civilian driver of the ill fated bus, Surinder Kumar directly to Command Hospital, Udhampur. The two civilian families traveling in the bus were returning back after implantation of Artificial Limbs at the Camp organized under aegis of Army at Bhimber Gali, Rajouri, said a PIB (Defence Wing) release. |
