| Mehbooba meets Antony, discusses troops reduction, revocation of AFSPA | | | New Delhi | Mar 02 Continuing her discussions with senior political leaders and Union Government functionaries on troop reduction and repealing of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in Jammu & Kashmir, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President and Member Parliament, Ms Mehbooba Mufti today met the Defence Minister, A K Antony to deliberate on the measures suggested by her party for strengthening the civil society and democratic institutions in the State. During her meeting with the Defence Minister, Ms Mufti emphasized that time-bound reduction of troops and revocation of AFSPA would be the most appropriate response to the fast changing ground situation in the State and the nation must grab this opportunity. She said instead of endlessly relying on the presence of the armed and security forces for maintenance of law and order situation in the State, the Union and the State Government must slowly relieve them of the burden and hand-over the responsibility to the local administrative institutions. Ms Mufti said the security situation in the State has witnessed a phenomenal transformation since 1990, when the militancy first erupted in the State. "The armed and the security forces have played a crucial role in the transformation of the situation and the time has now come, when the local administrative institutions must take the responsibility to stabilize and consolidate the normalization process," she said and added that necessary and immediate measures should also be taken to get the agricultural, orchard land and private and government buildings vacated by the security forces that are presently under their possession. Ms Mufti will be also meeting the Home Minister, Shivraj Patil to put across her party's view point on the issue of troop reduction and revocation of AFSPA. The PDP President has held a series of meetings here during the past two days on the issue. She has already discussed the issue with the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, Congress Chief, Mrs Sonia Gandhi and External Affairs Minister, Parnab Mukherhjee.
