Jammu | Mar 02
Sending a clear signal to coalition ally PDP, Congress in a significant development struck an accord with the main opposition National Conference for fielding consensus candidates for Jammu Municipality Mayor and Deputy Mayor. As per the accord, post of mayor would go to Congress and deputy Mayor to National Conference.
Sources told News Agency of Kashmir that Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and PCC President Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed had a hectic meeting of senior Congress leaders at formers residence before reaching on the decision. The move taken by congress is being viewed as a counter attack to its coalition ally PDP which has adopted an offensive approach against the former on the demilitarization issue.
This for the second time, National Conference has entered into an accord for Jammu Municipality Corporation Mayor Elections. On the first year of the Municipal Elections, NC had entered into an agreement with BJP to keep Congress away from the position of Mayor.
Given the strength of the corporater of the two parties in the Corporation, grabbing of the coveted posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor by Congress and National Conference would prove a cake walk. However, the election for the two positions is scheduled to be held on March 5.
While Peoples Democratic Party has only two Corporators, the main fight for the positions would between BJP and Congress, NC combined. Bhartiya Janata Party which having 25 Corporators has fielded its candidates for both the positions.
Congress which has highest number of 31Corporators to its side including four associate members would also get the support of 6 National Conference Corporators, making it the strongest party for the claimant for position of the Mayor. National Conference, on the other hand would get Congress support for Deputy Mayor.
In total, there are three candidates for each post in fray these are Narinder Singh Congress, Kavinder Gupta BJP and Zaffar Ahmed PDP for Mayor. Zaffar, however, is fighting as an Independent candidate.
Similarly Dharam Veer Jamwal NC, Rajesh Gupta and Neerja Khajuria independent for the position of Deputy Mayor.
Meanwhile, sources said that BSP having 2 Corporators and Independents 3 minus four supporting Congress, is likely to float third front to field their candidate.
