3/2/2007 11:02:15 PM

Jammu | Mar 02
In a surprise move, senior Congress leader and health Minister Pt Mangat Ram Sharma on Friday held close door breakfast meeting with Provincial President of the National Conference Ajay Sadhotra on the direction of Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad to finalise the party strategy ahead of elections for the post of Mayor and deputy Mayor of Jammu Municipal corporation schedule for March 6.
According to inside reports, Chief Minister had authorized health Minister Mangat Ram Sharma to get in touch with NC leader before the Mayor elections to ensure victory of their candidate.
The highly secretive meeting took place at the residence of Ajay Sadhotra where both the leaders were closeted together for a long time. Sudden political development, though at the civic poll level, has unnerved PDP leadership camping here in Jammu to sort out growing differences with its coalition partner over the issue of reductionof troops and repeal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act.
At present three candidates, Narinder Singh from the Congress, former Mayor Kavinder Gupta from BJP and Zafar Choudhary from the PDP are in the fray for the post of the Mayor. While three candidates Dharam Vir Singh Jamwal from the National Conference ,Rajesh Gupta from the BJP and one independent Neerja Khajuria are running for the post of deputy mayor.
The name of the congress nominee was finalised by the party high command after holding series of meetings with the party leaders and taking other corporators in to confidence. The party decision was delayed as several other congress corporators were willing to run for the post of the Mayor and were putting pressure on the party to finalise their candidature for the post of the Mayor.
What transpired during the breakfast meeting was not immediately known but if informed sources are to be believed both Congress and National Conference have now joined hands to ensure victory of their respective candidates for the post of Mayor and deputy Mayor. In case no candidate pulls out of the voting, Congress go to polls with a slight edge a sit enoys support of maximum corporators. With its 26 corporators and the support of six others from the NC its tally adds up to 32 in a house of 71 member leaving BJP at 25. Independents and others including two PDP corporators, one from the shiv sena and four from the BSP are placed at number three.
