| PM optimistic on early consensus on women's quota bill | | | New Delhi, Aug 3 As efforts continued for enlisting the support of political parties for the long-pending women's reservation bill, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today appeared more optimistic about an early consensus on the issue.
"I am more hopeful today than a week back," the Prime Minister told the delegation of woman leaders who had gone to press for an early introduction and passage of the bill, according to former MP Suhasini Ali.
The Prime Minister and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi were talking to leaders of various political parties to evolve a consensus on the issue, said Annie Raja, leader of National Federation of Indian Women.
The delegation included CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat, Gandhian Nirmala Deshpande and others.
Members in both Houses of Parliament yesterday demanded immediate introduction and passage of the bill and the government assured that it would not go back on its commitment.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister P R Dasmunsi had assured that there was "no going back" on this commitment by the government.
At the same time, he said, it being a Constitution amendment bill, it would require support from all sections and the Home Minister is actively engaged in talks on the issue with various political parties.
