| Govt contemplating to make Urdu compulsory in Schools: Peerzada | | | Srinagar, March 03 Education Minister Peerzada Mohammad Syed inaugurated the 8-day long Capacity Building Programme of Urdu language at State Institute of Education, Srinagar today. Organized by the Education department in collaboration with Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysore the programme will continue upto March 10, 2007. During the programme, five teachers of each district of the valley while 10 teachers from Srinagar district would be imparted the requisite training. Secretary School Education Mr Khazir Mohammad Wani, Director School Education Kashmir Mr Mohammad Rafi, Principal, Institute of Languages, Mysore, Dr.Yoog Raj, besides writers and scholars were present at the function. In his address, the Education Minister said that efforts are under way at State and Central level to promote Urdu which is our official language besides being one among national languages. He said a number of languages are being spoken in the state but Urdu is such a common language which every body can understand, speak and write. He said government is contemplating to make Urdu a compulsory subject from primary to Higher Secondary level in all the schools. On the occasion, Principal Institute of Mysore highlighted the objective of organizing such programmes which aims at promoting Urdu which is sweet and serene language.
