US denies knowledge of letter revealing Indian mole
8/3/2006 6:04:46 PM

Washington, Aug 3 The US State Department has denied having any knowledge of a letter purportedly written by Senator Thomas Graham to former Ambassador in India Harry Barnes in 1995 about a spy in the Indian prime minister's office who leaked nuclear secrets to the US.
"I'm not aware of the letter" spokesman Sean McCormack said yesterday. "We'll look into it for you." On Tuesday, BJP leader Jaswant Singh had claimed in Parliament that Graham had written a letter to Barnes about a mole in the then prime minister P V Narasimha Rao's office.

Singh also refers to the letter in his book 'A Call To Honour'.

But Barnes, who was the US envoy to India during 1981-85, told PTI yesterday he did not know any Senator by the name of Thomas Graham.

Meanwhile, elaborating on the progress of the Indo-US civilian nuclear deal, McCormack said the agreement was a "good deal" for India, the United States and "ultimately for the global non-proliferation regime." "We're working very closely with Congress to get the necessary legislation passed so that we can implement the agreement" he said.

"There are things that the Indian side has to do as well, so we're moving along here. The House has passed the bill. We're working with the Senate to get a vote scheduled and then there's going to have to be a conference and they're going to have to pass, finally, some legislation," the spokesman said.

According to McCormack, there are still steps to be taken but "we've come a long way and we are fully supportive and fully behind seeing this agreement being implemented."
