Congress President Sonia Gandhi will address the first general body meeting of the Congress Parliamentary Party during the current budget session tomorrow amid speculation whether she will touch the Ottavio Quattrocchi issue.
This is the first meeting after the detention in Argentina of the controversial Italian businessman, a prime accused in the Bofors payoffs case, who has now been released on bail with the condition that he should not leave the country.
The AICC, however, says Gandhi is under no obligation of any kind to "justify or explain" the issue.
"All such speculation is futile and sensational. What she says, when she says and how she says is for her to decide. But no one should assume that she is under any obligation of any kind to justify or explain (the issue)," spokesman Abhishek Singhvi has said.
His statement came against the backdrop of media reports said the rising clamour of the opposition on the issue, weeks before the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls, seems to have convinced the Congress leadership of the need to have an upfront approach on the controversial matter.
In the address, the first after the Budget session started on February 23, Gandhi is expected to ask the party workers in Uttar Pradesh to prepare for the Assembly elections in the key state.
Her speech is also significant in view of the fact that the Congress chief has so far not commented on the poll debacle in Punjab and Uttarakhand.
