| Gopal Sharma to continue as DG State Police | | | JAMMU, MARCH 5 Following the appointment of Mr S.I.S.Ahmed, an IPS officer of west Bengal Cadre,as Director General CRPF the possibilities of retaining Mr Gopal Sharma as DG Police in Jammu and Kashmir for some months more have brightened. Five months ago official circles had informed the Kashmir Independent Press that Chief Minister,Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad, had indicated to Mr Sharma that he would be allowed to continue as DG police till March. However, with the filling of the DG CRPF post chances for Mr Gopal Sharma’s retention in Jammu and Kashmir have further improved. He will be completing four year shortly but it all depended on Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad’s wish.Till date Mr Azad has supported him(Sharma) because he had found him the least controversial officer. Official sources said in Jammu on Monday “the Chief Minister is still indecisive on the person who would replace Mr Sharma and this too is going to help Mr Sharma to extend his stay in the state.” The sources said that Mr R.Tikoo,DG Prisons,is senior to Mr Sharma but the latter was empanelled on the strength of having been elevated to the post of DG police. It is not yet known whether Mr Azad would favour Mr Tikoo who, after empanelment, was being sought by the centre. The centre has already written to the state Government to relieve Mr Tikoo so that he was allowed tog on deputation to the Government of India .So far the state Government has not taken any decision on the matter. The delay in deciding whether Mr Tikoo would be spared for deputation to the centre or not was the result of Chief Minister’s realization that as DG prisons Tikoo had done well in stemming the rot that had crept in the jails, especially Kot Bhalwal, where militants had been using cell phones without any hindrance. When Mr Azad tookover as Chief Minister he wanted a senior police officer from outside the state to head the police in Jammu and Kashmir but he could no get a suitable person with the result Mr Sharma was allowed to continue.Mr Sharma had the backing of a section of senior Congress and PDP leaders. The official sources said that in case the Chief Minister wanted Mr Sharma to go to the centre he (Sharma) could easily be accommodated on some key posts. They said filling of DG BSF and CRPF posts was not the end of the game as there were other posts, that fall in the jurisdiction of the union Home Ministry, that Mr Sharma could hold . Another matter that seems to favour Mr Gopal Sharma is that couple of senior police officers, who had begun lobbying for the DG post, have stopped doing so after they came to know about the feelings of Mr Azad who had shown prfer for Mr Sharma.
