| Raju is Jammu’s Mayor, Jamwal his deputy | | | Jammu, Mar 6 Taking advantage of the tacit understanding with National Conference, the Congress today romped hope victorious with the prized post of Mayor in its bag, while National Conference candidate Dharamweer Jamwal won the Deputy Mayor’s post, in the elections to Jammu Municipality held today. While the heat and dust associated with the past municipal elections was missing, in a tight contest Congress candidate Narinder Singh ‘Raju’ defeated his nearest Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Kavinder Gupta by seven votes. Singh bagged 39 votes while Gupta managed to secure only 32 votes. Amidst slogan shouting in favour of NC-Congress combine, National Congress candidate Dharamveer Jamwal defeated nearest rival, independent candidate Neerja Khajuria. While, Jamwal, who had the support of Congress secured 44 votes, Khajuria, supported by Bhartiya Janata Party managed to get only 27 votes. The BJP, which had won the post of Mayor in 2005 with the support of National conference which has six corporators in the 71 member corporation could not repeat its victory as National Conference jumped to opposition camp in this elections. Earlier, the polls for the post of Mayor and deputy mayor took an interesting turn when PDP corporator supported by third front filed his papers for the post of Mayor, which turned the contest trilateral. However, decks were cleared for a straight fight between congress and BJP candidate for the post of Mayor as PDP corporator withdrew his papers ahead of polling. Here it must be mentioned that as a result of the unwritten alliance between the two major political parties, the BJP was trounced in today’s election, despite a good personal standing of its candidates, particularly Kavinder Gupta. Soon after the result was announced, both Congress and National Conference camps turned into celebration mode with slogan raising by supporters of both the parties. The winning candidates were garlanded by their supporters and large numbers were seen dancing to the tunes of bhangra.
