| CONG retains MAYOR; NC gets DEPUTY MAYOR | | |
JAMMU, March 6 In the absence of any cross voting the unwritten alliance between the Congress and the National conference showed its first results when the former bagged Mayors post and the latter that of the deputy mayor in the Jammu Municipality corporation elections, the results of which were declared here today. In the final tally, Congress candidate Narinder Singh defected his rival candidate of the BJP with a margin of seven votes while Dharamvir Singh Jamwal of the National conference surprised his rival candidate Neerja Khajuria by defeting her with a margin of 17 votes. The results, however, exhibited better management on the part of the National conference than the congress as Dharama Vir Singh Jamwal fielded by National conference for the post of deputy mayor polled 44 votes, five more than Narinder Singh of the congress who contested the poll for the post of Mayor and bagged 39 votes. The BJP, which had won the poll for the Mayor in 2005 with the support of National conference which has six corporators in the 71 member corporation, and as a result of cross voting in the congress camp, was today marred by the new NC-Cong alliance as its second time contestant Mr Kavinder Gupta could poll only 32 votes and the BJP backed independent candidate Neerja Khajuria for the post of deputy mayor secured only 27 votes. Soon after the results were declared jubiliant supporters of Congress and National conference celebrated the victory of their respective candidates and raised slogans. The winning candidates were garlanded by their supporters as large number of them danced to the tunes of bhangra. It may be mentioned that the polls for the post of Mayor and deputy mayor took an interesting turn when PDP corporator supported by third front filed his papers turning the two way contest in to trilateral. In the end, decks were cleared for the straight fight between congress and BJP candidate for the post of Mayor as PDP corporator withdrew his papers ahead of polling. |
