| Attempts to derail Indo-Pak peace process must be defeated' | | |
NEW DELHI, MAR 6 Ahead of Indo-Pak Foreign Secretary-level talks next week, Congress president Sonia Gandhi today said attempts to derail the peace process through terror attacks like Samjhauta Express blasts should not be allowed to succeed.
"I would like to begin by expressing our anguish at the cowardly attack on the Samjhauta Express last month. ....This was undoubtedly an attempt to undermine the progressing dialogue between India and Pakistan", she said addressing the general body meeting of the Congress Parliamentary Party.
Noting that the governments and the people of both countries came together to condemn "this inhuman act of terrorism", she recalled President A P J Abdul Kalam's address to Parliament in this regard. Kalam had said the two countries must not let the tragic event divert attention from common endeavour to normalise ties.
Gandhi also expressed grief over the recent killings in Assam. She said conducting National Games successfully in Guwahati was testimony to the resilience of the Assamese people.
The Congress president also thanked those who contributed to make the international Conference on Satyagraha, to mark the centenary of launching of the movement by Mahatma Gandhi, a success.
