ATS arrests three for links with SIMI
8/3/2006 6:08:40 PM

Mumbai, Aug 03: The Anti Terrorist Squad on Thursday arrested three persons, including one in connection with the Aurangabad arms seizure case. Two persons, Nihal Nachan and Saif Nachan, were arrested from Padgaon in Thane district under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) this morning while another person, Firoz Deshmukh has been arrested in Pune in connection with the Aurangabad arms seizure case, ATS sources said.

SIMI has been suspected of being involved in the July train blasts. The latest arrest takes the number of people in police custody to twelve in an investigation that has spread across several states, and into neighbouring Nepal.

ATS sources say that the trio arrested may not have been directly involved in the July 11 blasts but was suspected of assisting "subversive" elements.

The police suspect SIMI of involvement in the blasts and claim the group was taking orders from the Pakistan-based militant group Lashkar-e-Toiba.

Although with nearly three weeks having passed since the 7/11 terror bombings and with twelve arrests, the police are yet to achieve a breakthrough in unravelling the conspiracy.

All the suspects arrested had visited Pakistan for training in bomb making in the past or are part of Lashkar-e-Toiba modules and had contacts with the chief commander Azam Cheema.

Though the ATS claims that these suspects were indeed part of the conspiracy and had provided logistical support, the police has yet to figure out who made and planted the bombs, how the perpetrators made good their escape and the masterminds behind the conspiracy.

The ATS is also not clear whether the Aurangabad and Mumbai modules were responsible for the suburban train bombings, which killed around 200 people and injured over 700.

Police to seek Hawala operators` help to crack funding of 7/11

In an attempt to crack the source of foreign funding to the July 11 train bombings, police would seek the help of Hawala operators in the city, as it seized a large amount of foreign money, allegedly received by a key LeT operative, who is arrested in connection with the blasts.

Investigators suspect that the LE module, that executed the blasts, received large funding from their patrons abroad and the money was routed through hawala operators in Mumbai and around, police officials said.

As the police is yet to find out who the real perpetrators of the blasts are, an attempt is being made by the anti-terrorism squad to take help of Hawala operators to find out the source of the illegitimate foreign money that has come into India in the past six months to one year, and check if it had landed in the hands of subversive elements, they said.

Police, thus, intends to trace more subversive elements, whom it eventually plans to round up and interrogate them about the blasts.
