NC must clear its stand on troop reduction, revocation of AFSPA: PDP
3/7/2007 10:54:40 PM
Jammu, March 07
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has regretted that the National Conference (NC) President Omar Abdullah instead of taking a clear position on troop reduction, revocation of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) and vacation of civil properties by the security forces in Jammu & Kashmir, is following the old party tradition of subverting the people's interests for power.
Responding to some recent statements of NC President, a PDP spokesman today said that NC is once again performing its historic role of working against the people of Jammu and Kashmir as they have been doing at every crucial hour of our history dotted by the party's betrayals.
The spokesman said ideally the party should have lent its voice to the very genuine demand of reducing the presence of troops in civilian areas and withdrawal of the draconian laws applicable to the State, but the NC has its eyes only on power. The party leadership has relegated the once mighty organization into a virtual political stepney as Mr Omar Abdullah has been every now and then "offering his support even while there are no takers".
NC leadership, the spokesman said is aware that even the rank and file of the party, not the people of Jammu & Kashmir alone, are getting disillusioned with them. The NC has made itself a butt of ridicule as after having failed as the ruling party, it could not perform even as an opposition, keeping one eye always on a possibility of the "break-up of the Coalition" and somehow getting back to power as it always treated the State as a family estate that it has lost.
The spokesman said PDP's demand for reduction of troops is not new. It was in fact under the leadership of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed that the people of the State after 2002 elections, for the first time saw a possibility of peace returning to their lives. Not only did the State Government for the first time started performing its role of channelizing the genuine political aspirations of the people, but it also piloted the issues on which NC had exploited the sentiments but never delivered. It was as a result of these policies that the State became the center of positive political and diplomatic action that would ultimately lead to a resolution of the conflict in the sub-continent. He said the troop reduction process was in fact initiated by the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh in November 2004 and made an announcement to this effect in Srinagar.
PDP spokesman said NC leadership is scared of the prospect of the reduction of troops because of its inherent feeling of insecurity. "They have stopped believing in the people's support, which provides the real security to political parties and personalities," he said.
