| Two-day workshop on IRP commences | | | JAMMU | MAR 8 A two day workshop on ‘Intellectual Property Rights (IRP) for Public and R&D Labs,’ an India-European Union joint venture programme was inaugurated by Vice Chancellor Jammu University Prof Amitab Matoo at RRL here today. Principal Secretary J&K Information and Technology A S Sidhu was the chief guest. In his inaugural address Prof Matoo said that such programmes are of immense importance to bring awareness and access of patents not only to the institutions but also public in general. He said that age of gaining knowledge for the sake of knowledge is over and to produce quality knowledge investments in terms of time and money are required which should be properly rewarded and therefore awareness of IRP assumes significance. Highly appreciating the efforts of CSIR in this area, Prof Matoo referred to the efforts made by Dr G N Qazi Director RRL Jammu by filing a large number of patents and creating awareness among the scientists of the region. It may be recalled that Government of India and European Union have entered into an agreement to enhance trade and investment opportunities in India (TIPD) and IRP is one of the important components of this agreement. The overall objective of this IRP component of TIPD is to support India’s efforts to bring the administrative and enforcement efficiency of its IRP system in tune with international standards of efficiency and effectiveness and to raise awareness among P&D Labs. The two day programme will be based on emerging issues of IRP, such as patent and claims drafting, technology transfer, licensing, valuation of IRPs, agro patenting and management of IRPs. The workshop will highlight the present scope of IRP policies being adopted and to be adopted by public labs with emphasis on the trade development with European Union.. Prof Mrs S K Verma and Shasaranam elaborated on the working of TIDP to promote trade between India and the European Union, while Dr Qazi in his welcome address informed the gathering that the laboratory has filed patents in the fields of drugs, phytomolecules and biotechnology and thanked the participants and the experts for sparing time for deliberations on these important issues Dr R K Raina presented vote of thanks.
