| Bill on linking aid to Pak on progress in fight on terror | | | WASHINGTON, MAR 8 Three US lawmakers have introduced a legislation in the senate asking the Bush Administration to link future military aid to Pakistan to the progress by Islamabad on crackdown on al Qaeda and Taliban within its territory. "Military aid to Pakistan should be guided by demonstrable progress in achieving certain objectives related to counterterrorism and democratic reforms," read a text of the resolution submitted by Senators Chris Dodd, John Kerry and Joseph Biden. Biden and Dodd are vying for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination, while Kerry was the Democrats' nominee who lost to Republican President George W Bush in 2004.The three senior members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee will seek to have the resolution added to the comprehensive 9-11 legislation. "As the Senate works to implement the 9/11 Commission's recommendations to make our country safer here at home, we must never forget of the importance of going after the terrorists before they can strike," Kerry said. "Our top military and intelligence officials report that the resurgent Taliban is using the tribal regions of Pakistan as a base to launch attacks against coalition forces in Afghanistan. |
