| Passport issued to Syed Ali Shah Geelani | | |
NEW DELHI, MAR 8 The government today issued a passport valid for a year to ailing hardline Kashmiri separtist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani so that he could seek treatment abroad. The passport, valid till March seven, 2008, was handed over to his son Naseem Zaffar Geelani at the Regional Passport Office here after all the formalities were completed, officials said. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had on Tuesday asked officials to extend all asistance to Geelani to facilitate his vist abroad for medical treatment. Geelani, the chairman of the breakaway hardline faction of the Hurriyat Conference, had applied for passports along with his wife and son Naseem. The applications of Geelani and his son were cleared while formalities for his wife's passport were being completed, the officials said. Geelani and his son will now apply visas at the US embassy here for their travel. The Prime Minister's directive came after he reviewed the case of Geelani, who is suffering from kidney cancer. Geelani underwent a checkup at Apollo Hospital here, where doctors suggested he should undergo laser therapy in the US. |
