| Four retd Indian judges proposed for jt committee with Pak | | |
NEW DELHI, MAR 8 In pursuance with an understanding with Pakistan, India has set up a four-member team of retired judges who will form part of a bilateral committee to look into the issues of prisoners of the respective countries.The names have been communicated to Pakistan, External Affairs Ministry said here today. The nominees include Justice K R Vyas, former Chief Justice of Bombay High Court, Justice Amarjit Choudhary, Justice A S Gill, both former judges of Punjab and Haryana High Court, and Justice M A Khan, former judge of Delhi High Court. A decision to set up the committee of retired judges of superior judiciary on prisoners was taken by the two countries during the visit of External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee to Islamabad on January 13. The committee is to propose steps to ensure human treatment and expedite release of prisoners who have completed their prison terms. Pakistan has already proposed its names to be included in the joint committee. More than 650 Indians, most of them fishermen, are lodged in various Pakistani jails. Several of them have complained of inhuman treatment meted out to them. |
