| J&K State committed for empowerment of women: Azad | | | Jammu, March 08 “The Jammu and Kashmir State has played a vital role in ushering women towards their right of empowerment by timely implementation of all the provisions enshrined in constitution for their elevation in different sectors particularly by ensuring 33 per cent seats for them in panchayats, urban local bodies and other representative institutions”, said Chief Minister Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad while addressing three separate functions held in connection with International Women’s Day at Srinagar and Jammu today. The first function was organized by Sadbhavana-ke-Sipahi at Jammu as part of celebration of UN Day for International Peace and Women Rights. Noted Gandhian Mr. S. P. Varma also spoke. The second function was organized by J&K State Women Development Corporation at University campus Jammu in collaboration with the university. Minister for Social Welfare Haji Nissar Ali and Managing Director J&K State Women Development Corporation Dr. Naheed Soz also spoke to the gathering. Another largely attended function was organized by State Social Welfare Board at SKICC Srinagar. Minister for Health and Medical Education Mr. Mangat Ram Sharma, Chairman State Social Welfare Board Mr. G. M. Saroori and MLA Mrs. Khem Lata Wakhloo also spoke on the occasion. Chief Minister mentioned the great women who attained excellence in wide ranging faculties including spiritual, scientific, literature, technology, sports etc. and brought laurels to the country and made their mark in various periods of Indian history. He said that by providing 33 per cent reservation to women at grassroot democratic institutions like panchayats and urban local bodies, around 10 lakh women representatives in the country have been elected to these institutions. He said our country has unique distinction of having such a large number of women representatives at the grassroots. Mr. Azad called upon women particularly educated to come forward in a big way and play their role in political field actively, adding that this would help in a big way to achieve deserved empowerment for women and ensure their all round socio-economic progress. He also threw light on the need for skill upgrading and promotion of female education as these help in creating greater awareness among them about their rights and opportunities available. Chief Minister asked intellectuals, academicians, opinion makers and women activists to pool their efforts and create awareness among women about their rights, adding that seminars, symposiums and interaction sessions would prove highly beneficial in this regard. Greeting women on the auspicious day, Mr. Azad said that though women have attained place of prominence and achieved excellence in different spheres but still more needs to be done particularly in rural areas for their empowerment. “Education is the basic tool to achieve this objective”. He said this day also provides us an opportunity to march ahead with still greater resolve for overall socio-economic development of women folk. Chief Minister also inaugurated exhibition-cum-sale of handicrafts items produced by various self-help groups at Jammu University. He went round all the stalls, took keen interest in the products and interacted with the members of the groups. While speaking to a gathering at SKICC, Chief Minister highlighted the importance of empowerment, education and social justice to women and said that India is proud to produce women of great stature. He said sub-continent also depicted better thought and attitude as since recent past many women leaders emerged on global spectrum from India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. He said women like Lal-Ded and Habba Khatoon are revered and remembered women personalities in Jammu and Kashmir. He asked NGOs to strive for making women aware of their rights and seek their universalization of education. Mr. Azad said discrimination to women has its long history but with the growth of democracy and education this trend has declined to a greater extent and women at present enjoy equal rights to excel in all fields. President NGOs’ Federation (NCF) Mr. Imtiaz Ahmad also spoke on the occasion. Minister for Social Welfare Haji Nissar Ali who spoke at the function organized at Jammu University said that women empowerment has required a new meaning in the present day scenario where education and economic empowerment have become need of the hour. Referring to the activities of State Women Development Corporation, Haji Nissar Ali dwelt on various initiatives taken by the corporation for skill upgradation and bringing more and more women under the umbrella of self-help groups. He said a large number of women across the state are coming forward to join these groups to become economically self-reliant. Giving a road map of the future plan of action of the corporation, he said efforts are already on to promote self-help groups in a big way even in the farthest corners of the state. While addressing the function organized by Sadbhavana-ke-Sipahi, Mrs. Shamim Azad threw light on the importance of the day and need for women empowerment. Among those who also spoke on the occasion included noted Gandhian Mr. S. P. Varma. The function was attended by MLA Mr. Yash Paul Kundal, Mr. Balraj Puri, Mrs. Kulwant Kour, Mrs. Shakuntala Joshi, Mr. M. M. Joshi and a large number of peace activists from all over the state. Managing Director Women Development Corporation Dr. Naheed Soz at the function held at Jammu University in her welcome address highlighted various activities being undertaken by the corporation at block level for empowerment of women. She said that the exhibition-cum-sale of handicraft items would continue at Jammu University grounds till 11th March. Hindustan Petroleum Corporation, J&K Police, Handloom Corporation, Information Department, Directorate of Horticulture and Take-One were the major sponsors of the programme. Vice Chancellor Jammu University Prof. Amitabh Mattoo, legislators, corporators, Secretary Social Welfare Mr. N. K. Verma, senior officers, university teachers, students, prominent citizens and 600 members of self-help groups from far-off areas like Basohli, Rajouri, Poonch, Kishtwar, Chenani, Kellar Pulwama, Breng Anantnag, Tangmarg, Budgam, Kupwara and Kangan participated in the function.
